duì bù qǐ wǒ de zhōng wén bù hǎo Sorry, my Chinese isn’t so good!

  • Sorry!  duì bù qǐ

  • Sorry my Chinese isn’t very good!   duì bù qǐ , wǒ de zhōng wén bù hǎo!

  • What would you like to eat?   nǐ yào chī shén me?

Transition are an English indie rock band who went to Taiwan, learnt Mandarin and then wrote and produced songs in Chinese to their large Asian fan base. This song is about some of the troubles they first encountered when learning Chinese, like, muddling up their tones and accidentally saying “I want to sleep” rather than saying “I want dumplings” when ordering at a restaurant. If you want to know more about their story you can watch their documentary here.

  • sleep = shuì jiào
  • dumplings = shuǐ jiǎo
